Denial Makes It All Okay

This weekend I decided I’d had enough. I was sick of being sick. Also sick of blogging about being sick. It was getting very tedious, that story. So I decided not to be sick. And to run. Six miles in denial on Friday, five on Saturday, and–shazam–20 miles on Sunday.

Yes, I made my body my bitch. Gave my phlegm the smack down by way of two puffs of albuterol and ran til I couldn’t run no more.

Sometimes you have to run for three hours to show yourself that you can. Of course, “can” is a fairly flexible word. Sort of like Clinton’s definition of “is.” I can run 20 miles. With considerable discomfort from miles 15-20 and a pretty embarrassing sideways stair descent on Monday morning. But technically, I can do it.

If there was one thing I wish I could get for Christmas (other than, like, peace), it’s mileage. I really want to determine a way to get miles without having to actually run all of them. Not because I’m lazy but because when you’re injured or sick or something, it doesn’t seem right that you should sacrifice fitness. It just seems cruel and unfair to be hacking up a lung and losing fitness at the same time. If there was something like a mileage gift card, that would be great. Like if on iTunes, you could download miles. I might actually consider Nike+ if they could work that one out.

In the event that they don’t figure out a way to gift mileage over the next 25 days, I still want these totally unnecessary boots. And, you know, peace.

I would definitely want one of those cards if I could have it! 20 miles, I am impressed!! Great job on the mileage!

Great job on 20 on Sunday. I am jealous, I did 3 hours in the pool to simulate my missed 20 mile run, it wasn’t fun.

Hey – cool boots! In fact, therein may lie the answer to your mileage gift card.

Ole Blue Eyes little girl shows the way – walkin’! And since her boots resemble your boots (soon to be?:), well, listen to the message. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRkovnss7sg

Toshihiko Seko, two time Boston Marathon Champion, would take looooooong power walks when he couldn’t run – like 4 – 5 hours worth. At least it burns the calories – and certainly worked for him:)

I wonder whether the loss of fitness when sick is just perceived and temporary. I mean, I am getting over some who knows what bug and I had to take a break while changing the sheets last night. Hopefully, I won’t have that problem in a couple of days when (hopefully, again) this bug will be out of my system. You’ll be OK. The fitness is there. No worries:)

    Those are AWESOME boots!!!

When everyone was using daylight saving’s extra hour for sleep or more running or whatever, I banked that hour so that when I run Tucson in a couple weeks, I’ll use it to come in an hour earlier!! Yeah, you and I know how to bank some time!!!

I thought I was the only one obsessed with Frye boots…whew!

Off to the gym, sadly, not for a run but for Pilates tonight.

I’ve been through the same thing! About two weeks ago, I said no more, and just decided to keep moving even though I’ve been sick. I think it has helped. I think I need to be constantly doing cardio with my stupid asthma.

    Way to get out there!

OMG! Just buying the f-ing boots! You’ve wanted them for like a year!! :)
Good job sucking it up and snorting it out.

dealing with a similar phlegm situation. I just started on albuterol, I’ve been (sort of) diagnosed with exercise induced asthma. It helps.

I have those boots, albeit not in red. They look fab, but not good for walking far and long. But for standing and looking hot, exceptional.

Love the boots. Needing the card. Goin’ out to see what happens.
(way to go on your 20 – no easy feat regardless)
